This album presents the complete concert, just as it was recorded that historic night with Gene Krupa, Harry James, Jess Stacy and singer Martha Tilton. The original one-of-a-kind recordings were not heard until 1950 when Benny Goodman's daughter Rachel discovered them in a closet. They were transferred to then new reel-to-reel tape, preserved for all time. With digital technology, this concert sounds better than ever as presented on two high quality CDs. The ambience of the hall has been preserved along with the audience reaction and the dynamic performance of the musicians in what has become a key moment in musical history. This set is the result of 18 months and 200 hours of studio work by Bjorn Alstedt to restore the warm sound of the original. It is, indeed, a classic restoration of the original seven decades old masters. It is a worthy addition to your library. | SWINGING ON A V-DISC V-Discs were 12 inch 78 RPM vinyl recordings made for service men by the armed forces in WWII. The V-Disc program was one way of sending a bit of home to troops overseas, for all the top stars of the time volunteered to perform on these unique recordings, not available to the general public at the time.

Now some of the best of the V-Discs have been digitally restored and included in a four CD set, allowing us these years later to hear versions of tunes never recorded for the commercial market. While some of the bands DO perform selections also issued on commercial recordings, this collection contains only the versions recorded especially for the V-Disc effort. In most instances the performances are especially unique with combinations of musicians and singers not able to be heard together by the public because of contract restrictions. No such restrictions affected V-Discs.
The very first track features a group called the New York City All-Stars. They are Roy Eldridge, Illinois Jacquet, Count Basie, Al Caiola, Red Callendar and Buddy Rich performing with unfettered joy. That's an example of the kind of otherwise unavailable one-time performances on this carefully crafted V-Disc four CD set.
The line-up includes: Because of the rarity of the original recordings there are a few examples of slightly inferior sound quality, but the musical quality and uniqueness in these few instances makes up for the slight imperfection. | Those Proper Box people have done it again, issuing a
definitive four CD set of the Count Basie musical history from 1936 to
1950, with the original SHOE SHINE BOY through BASIE BOOGIE. In between is
ONE O'CLOCK JUMP, JOHN'S IDEA, TOPSY, SENT FOR YOU YESTERDAY, BLUE AND
SENTIMENTAL, JUMPIN' AT THE WOODSIDE, TAXI WAR DANCE, LESTER LEAPS IN,
MOTEN SWING, I WANT A LITTLE GIRL, plus later gems including RED BANK
BOOGIE, THE MAD BOOGIE, TAPS MILLER, ONE O'CLOCK BOOGIE, SWINGIN' THE
BLUES, BASIE'S BASEMENT, SUGAR, HEY PRETTY BABY and a later ONE O'CLOCK
JUMP version.
As with all the Proper Box collections, the CDs are filled to capacity with finely engineered and carefully selected cuts, 99 in all. Singer Jimmy Rushing is well represented as is the "dream rhythm section" of Walter Page, Freddie Green and Jo Jones. Also represented during the years presented in this album are such greats as Buck Clayton, Lester Young, Herschel Evans, 'Sweets' Edison, Dicky Wells, Clark Terry, Buddy DeFranco, Al Killian and Illinois Jacquet among others. There are selections by the Basie small groups, heretofore difficult to find. DUPREE BLUES and RED WAGON, for example with just piano, bass, drums and guitar, plus the Basie Sextet with YOU CAN DEPEND ON ME. Other small groups include "Basie's Bad Boys" and the "Count Basie All-Stars," but there's plenty of Big Band action too. Count Basie recorded for a number of labels over the years covered by this collection, and they're all brought together in this album with key numbers from Vocalion, Decca, CBS, Columbia, V-Disc, Okeh and Victor. Count Basie was revered by all who knew him, both professionally and personally. This boxed set is a lavish treat reflecting that reverence and covering the early development of one of the top contributors to what we now know as the Big Band sound.
